What’s New in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2026 Release Wave 2
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central continues to evolve with new capabilities across AI,
reporting, finance, e-commerce, supply chain, and everyday user experience. Update 29.0 marks the start of Business Central 2026 Release Wave 2.
Rather than looking at every technical change included in the release, here are some of the
updates that may be particularly interesting for Business Central users.

What you can look forward to with Business Central 2026 Release Wave 2
Copilot and AI Agents Continue to Expand
AI has a significant presence in Business Central 29.0. Microsoft is introducing a new Microsoft Copilot chat experience, currently in public preview, while also expanding the capabilities available through AI agents.
The release includes improvements to purchase order matching in the Payables Agent, easier
management of agent permissions, a dedicated task pane for managing tasks from different
agents, and the ability to review agent-generated content directly from Business Central pages.
These improvements can make it easier for organizations to explore how AI can support
everyday business activities while keeping users involved in reviewing and managing the work
performed by agents.
Better Connections with Power Platform and Dataverse
Business Central is designed to work with other Microsoft solutions. Update 29.0 adds the ability to map additional Dataverse fields in Business Central.
For organizations using Business Central alongside Dynamics 365 Sales, Power Apps, and Power
Automate, or other Dataverse-based applications, which provide additional flexibility when
information needs to move between applications. This can help organizations create more connected processes across ERP, CRM, and Power Platform.
New Possibilities for Connecting AI to Business Central Data
Another development worth following is Microsoft's continued work with Model Context
Protocol (MCP). Business Central 29.0 introduces the ability to run data queries through the MCP Server.
For developers and partners, this creates additional possibilities for building AI solutions that
need to work with Business Central information. Although this capability is more technical, it is an important development as AI becomes more closely connected with business applications and business data.
EDI Comes to Business Central E-Documents
Another interesting addition is EDI document exchange, currently available in public preview.
EDI, or Electronic Data Interchange, is commonly used by businesses to exchange structured
documents electronically with customers, vendors, and trading partners.
Bringing additional EDI capabilities into the Business Central E-Documents framework could
provide organizations with more options for automating document exchange and reducing
manual processing. For businesses that regularly exchange high volumes of purchases, sales, or other business transactions documents with trading partners, this is an area worth watching.
More Options for Reporting and Data Analysis
Reporting receives several improvements in version 29.0. Users can automate report outputs, bookmark list views and analysis tabs, and run multiple financial reports into a single PDF.
Microsoft is also introducing additional capabilities around document report themes and layouts,
including improvements to the Word add-in. These changes can give organizations more flexibility in how reports and business documents are prepared, managed, and presented.
Shopify Integration Continues to Grow
Organizations using Business Central together with Shopify will also see several
enhancements. The release includes improvements for managing Shopify B2B companies, catalogues, and pricing, as well as handling order changes, exchanges, and refunds.
Business Central can also synchronize tariff numbers and country or region of origin information
with Shopify. These enhancements can help organizations create a more connected process between e-commerce and their back-office operations.
Improvements for Supply Chain and Manufacturing
Business Central 29.0 also introduces several enhancements for organizations managing
inventory, warehousing, subcontracting, and manufacturing. These include improvements for subcontracting processes, warehouse-enabled locations, quality tests and inspections, and manufacturing documents and capacity calendars.
For organizations with more complex operational processes, these updates provide additional
opportunities to reduce manual work and improve how information flows across purchasing,
inventory, warehouse, and production activities.
Improvements to Everyday User Experience
Some of the most useful improvements do not necessarily involve major new functionality. Business Central 29.0 introduces several changes designed to make everyday navigation
easier.
Users can preview images directly in the web client, see recently searched items in Tell Me,
and access recently used values in lookups. Small improvements like these can make a noticeable difference for employees who work in Business Central throughout the day.
What Should Business Central Customers Do Next?
A new release does not mean every available feature should be turned on immediately.
Organizations should review the new capabilities and determine which ones are relevant to their
processes.
It is also important to distinguish between features that are generally available and those that
are still in public preview. Before updating Production, organizations with integrations, extensions, or customizations should use a Sandbox environment to test the new version and confirm that their existing processes continue to work as expected.
Looking Ahead
Business Central 2026 Release Wave 2 shows that Microsoft's investment extends well beyond traditional ERP functionality.
AI and agents are becoming more closely connected with everyday business processes, while
Microsoft continues to improve reporting, ecommerce, supply chain, integrations, and the overall
user experience. Another important change is how Microsoft will communicate future developments. Starting in September 2026, Microsoft is moving new Business Central capabilities to the AI at Work roadmap instead of publishing the traditional release plans.
For Business Central customers, staying current is becoming increasingly important—not simply
to receive software updates, but to understand which new capabilities could create value for the
business.
